The Inconvenience of Opportunity

Opportunity is, by definition, the point at which circumstances are favorable for whatever it is we desire. But, we believe we can orchestrate opportunity. We plan for the perfect time to fall in love, have children, quit a job, start a business, take a vacation, or do any number of things to make ourselves happier. We wait for the perfect time and the ideal circumstances before choosing to act on anything. We become so cautious; we begin to believe the right time to pursue those things that fuel our passion for life and living cannot possibly be now.

So few of us ever realize the life we desire because perfect timing and circumstances are impossible to achieve. If we were to pay attention to our surroundings, we would see opportunities swirling all around, waiting to be plucked by a brave soul willing to take those risks that come with seizing an opportunity before the rest of the world is ready to acknowledge its existence.

The best opportunities are not those we wait for; the best opportunities are those that lie in wait for us. They jump from the shadows when we least expect them. They appear again, and again, nudging us to grab hold and see how far we can ride them. They encourage us to engage now because now is the time, not tomorrow, not next week or next year. Now.

And still, we ignore the call of opportunity. We dismiss that call because of inconvenient timing. We tell ourselves these opportunities can never come to fruition because we are not ready to take action. When all the stars align, and opportunity pushes its way into our lives, the timing and the circumstances may not be convenient.

Sadly, it takes some of us too much time to learn that living a meaningful life is seldom convenient.
